What is a Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth, casting a moving shadow on our planet. Along the narrow path where the Moon’s darkest shadow – the umbra – falls, observers can experience totality: the Sun’s bright disk is completely covered.

Slight changes in distance create different eclipse types. When the Moon appears large enough in the sky, it can fully block the Sun (a total eclipse). When it appears slightly smaller, a thin ring of sunlight remains – an annular "ring of fire" eclipse.

For a few breathtaking minutes, the architecture of the solar system becomes visible to the naked eye.

Moon Moves Between Sun and Earth

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow onto Earth’s surface.

Perfect Alignment

Because the Sun is about 400 times farther away and 400 times larger than the Moon, they appear the same size in our sky. Only a precise alignment creates an eclipse.

Umbra, Penumbra & Antumbra

The darkest central shadow (umbra) creates totality. The penumbra produces partial eclipses. When the Moon is slightly farther away, its smaller disk leaves a bright ring called the antumbra.

Ring of Fire & the Corona

During an annular eclipse, a blazing ‘ring of fire’ surrounds the Moon. During totality the Sun’s outer atmosphere—the corona—becomes visible as a ghostly halo.

What is a solar eclipse?

Is it safe to look at a solar eclipse?

How long does totality last?

Totality typically lasts only a few minutes at any given location. The longest possible totality is around 7 minutes, but most modern eclipses deliver 1–4 minutes of totality along the narrow path where the Moon’s umbra crosses Earth.

Why are solar eclipses so rare?

Solar eclipses require a precise alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Eclipses do happen multiple times per year somewhere on Earth, but the path of totality is very narrow—often just a few hundred kilometers wide—so any single location sees a total solar eclipse only every few decades.
